Maybe you have a good life and don't think much about violence...
Nevertheless you are surrounded with it.
The news, media, and even “entertainment” are full of violence.
Have you heard of cruelty to animals, children, spouses?
Are you exposed to hurtful language?
We are immersed on a society that uses violence to solve problems of
unwanted pregnancy,
disposing of criminals or aliens, and
international relations.
How can we Turn From Violence?
First notice it! It's become the water we swim in, notice it!
Shut off the violence in the media - listening is supporting...
complain to those who sponsor or spew it on us.
Walk away - do not contaminate yourself with it.
Report it - Help others to address this problem.
Don't applaud it - regardless of your association with it.
Violence begets violence, and a violent “solution” doesn't last long.
Don't participate in any way...
But do think about the source of the problem.....
What other approaches could one try?
Those who have thought deeply about violence
Speak of a subtle structural violence..
perhaps a violence that restricts health care,
or a violence that degrades the environment.
The violence of poverty..
even the violence that brings us meat.
We are part of the system of
violence.
