I wish to nominate Susi Brothers, of Beaverton, Oregon, for peacemaker of the year. For over three years you can find Susi at Hall Blvd. and Fifth in Beaverton standing for peace. “Stand for Peace” occurs every Wednesday between 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Susie is one of the founders of this event and over the years has been a dynamic leader and a sustaining force. She sends out weekly emails regarding “Stand for Peace” and notifies us of other peace related activities.
Susi’s peace vigil is for world peace and support of our troops. She has enlightened others as to what stand for peace is all about. For the occasional passersby who shouts obscenities at the participants, Susie likes to reserve judgment, acknowledging that we do not know where that person perspective is coming from.
Susie is friendly and outgoing. She has been an inspiration and support to all of the “stand for peace” participants. Her friendly greeting and smile can bring warmth to a often cold and freezing night.

Thank you Susie for all that you have done and please keep up the good work. Perhaps in time, peace will enable you to spend your Wednesday evenings elswhere.

Ben Fain, of Beaverton, Oregon:

  1. Ben Fain has driven the bus for the Bus Project since its beginnings. This is an organization devoted to getting people out to canvas for political candidates who pledge to fight for Education, Environment, Economic Strength, Equal Rights, Election Reform, and Health Care. These issues support the ideals of the Catholic Social Teachings, and the work of the group has brought improvements in social justice to our state.

  2. In August of 2005, he organized a weekly Peace Vigil in Beaverton to encourage people to communicate their concern about the war. He has consistently promoted the growth of the effort, with publicity, selling peace pins and bumper stickers, speaking to groups, showing up every week with signs and candles, and inviting people to become a part of it.

Jeff Halper, of Jerusalem, Israel, organized ICAHD, (Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions) to challenge and resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes in the occupied territories, and to organize Israelis, Palestinians and international volunteers to jointly rebuild demolished Palestinian homes.  He has created a new mode of Israeli peace activity based on nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience.  Dr. Halper wants to “liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence" and "to build equality between their people by recognizing and celebrating their common humanity.”  Halper is the author of several books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict including “An Israeli In Palestine” and is a frequent writer and speaker about Israeli politics, focusing mainly on nonviolent strategies to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. http://www.icahd.org/eng/

Bill Bradbury_ While Oregon Secretary of State, Bill traveled the state presenting Al Gore’s presentation, An Inconvenient Truth with modifications to include climate change information pertaining to Oregon. He has used his own time and funds to make himself available to groups all over the state, and has implemented his beliefs in promoting laws that helped Oregon to become a leader in addressing this environmental justice issue. He continues to offer the presentation to groups all over the state.

In implementing the vote by mail for every election, Bill made voting possible for many rural, elderly and disabled citizens who have difficulty getting to the polls. Turnout has improved with the new method. He also put election information on the internet for easy access for all voters.

Reverend Father Roy Bourgeois, M.M. is an American priest in the Maryknoll  order of the Roman Catholic Church and is the founder of the human rights group SOA Watch, an organization that seeks to close the School of the Americas through nonviolent means.

Nominated at the March exhibit:

I nominate Anne Frank. Anne Frank's diary is known throughout the world. It is the second most read book next to the bible. It is a reminder of the horrors of war. It was a war of extermination of the Jews fed by hate! If only man did not have such short memories – then the stench of war will never be forgotten. Peace! (Anne Frank lived 1929 – 1945 see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Frank )
